Ffion paced back and forth, trying to keep her muscles warm while she worked out how to return along the path without angering the seagull. She could run really quickly and hope it didn’t manage to get her, or she could crawl commando-style past the bench and hope it didn’t spot her, but the idea of tripping and lying prone and vulnerable or being pecked as she crawled was incredibly unappealing.

The bird was perched on the bench now, fat and proud, clearly revelling in being in charge of its territory. But people used this path all the time for walks, runs and more. A grumpy seagull shouldn’t be able to keep the spot to itself. It could even drive someone over the cliff and that would be dreadful.

The five-minute walking time seemed to be ticking away a lot faster than usual and it felt like a doomsday timer. She needed to make a decision. Following the coastal path all the way was not an option, not today anyway, so she’d have to return the way she came. There was nothing else for it. She took a deep breath, preparing to run as fast as she could past the bird, hoping that by the time it got airborne, she’d be long gone.

Just as she was about to set off, she heard footsteps, the regular pounding beats of a runner. She held her breath. Should she alert the runner in some way, warn them about the aggressive bird, try to make a break for freedom while the bird was distracted with them?

The figure came over the brow of the small rise in the path, strong legs carrying him easily along, eyes hidden by dark glasses, but she could tell as soon as she saw him.

It was Joe.
